Clinical use of SyMRI
The Swedish newspaper “Västerbottenkuriren” published an article about the implementation of SyMRI® Diagnostics at NUS, University Hospital of Northern Sweden.
“New MRI technique provides better control of how Multiple Sclerosis affects a patient. Synthetic MRI does not only give us an image, but also the exact measures of how the disease has affected the brain.” Read the article (in Swedish)
Örebro University Hospital applies brain segmentation software from SyntheticMR in MS research
SyntheticMR AB and Örebro University Hospital has entered into a collaboration agreement regarding the use of SyntheticMR’s software SyMRI® Diagnostics in research on Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Örebro University Hospital will use SyMRI Diagnostics in a research project aiming to assess MS using conventional and Synthetic MRI images, identify MS lesions based on tissue characteristics and evaluate the correlation between clinical symptoms and brain tissue changes as measured with the SyMRI software.
“One possible advantage with Synthetic MRI is a shortening of study time as only one series of images is needed to obtain the required type of images. Another interesting potential with Synthetic MRI is that tissue characteristics, which are used to create contrast in MR images, are determined through a quantitative method. We aim to evaluate these possibilities”, comments Wolfgang Krauss, MD at Örebro University Hospital, as motivation for using SyMRI. Wolfgang Krauss will lead the research project under the supervision of Per Thunberg, Associate Professor and PhD.
“We are looking forward to collaborating with Örebro University Hospital on this project and have high expectations on the outcome, which is important for us in order to make sure that we develop software that is optimized for both research and clinical needs”, says Marcel Warntjes, CEO of SyntheticMR.
Umeå University Hospital improves monitoring of treatment efficacy in MS with Synthetic MRI innovation
SyntheticMR has secured an order for our magnetic resonance imaging software from Umeå University Hospital. The software will be used in clinical practice to monitor the treatment efficiacy of multiple sclerosis (MS).
The software, SyMRI® Diagnostics, includes tools to automatically estimate a measure for brain atrophy and, with minor manual interaction, retrieve the volume of local brain structures and lesions.
“SyMRI enables us to retrieve accurate values of the patients status that we could not get before”, says Dr Richard Birgander, Neuroradiologist at Umeå University Hospital. “We have analyzed the software´s functionality and the result looks very good, which has led to the decision to introduce it in regular clinical procedures.”
“Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) generally has been about looking at pictures and trying to interpret them. SyMRI finally provides us with objective numbers” says Anders Svenningsson, Neurologist at Umeå University Hospital.”My goal is to integrate the SyMRI approach into the Swedish MS register to have more accurate follow-up possibilities for these patients”, The Swedish MS register is a nation-wide database that strives to improve care and convey knowledge of Multiple Sclerosis.

Röntgenveckan 2011
The annual meeting for professionals within Radiology was held in Umeå, September 12-16th. SyntheticMR was participating in both sessions and the exhibition.
Wednesday 14th, 8.30 to 10 am an interesting session was held about synthetic MRI and SyntheticMR.
New member of the team
SyntheticMR gives a warm welcome to Camilla Sandberg. She started her work June 1st as Quality Assurance Manager and has experience from both MRI and software development for the Medtech sector.
Camilla has an exam as staff nurse with focus on radiology. Her specialist area is project management and administration. In her previous job Camilla held the title Release Manager at Cambio Healthcare Systems and before that she worked at Sectra as Application Specialist.
With the appointment of Camilla we are adding another Medtech specialist to our highly competent team – we are very pleased to welcome Camilla to our company.
SyntheticMR at UKRC
The UK Radiological Congress of 2011 was held in Manchester, 6-8 June, and SyntheticMR participated together with our partner Sectra.
Tuesday June 7th, our CEO Marcel Warntjes held a presentation on the stand about quantitive MRI and our product SyMRI Diagnostics.
Location : Manchester Central, Windmill Street, Manchester, M2 3GX.
The MR Contrast Navigation Window feature is a useful tool on the graphical user interface of the SyMRI Diagnostics software that allows the radiologist to easily spot the current contrast-setting in the MR images, alternatively to navigate to a certain contrast setting interactively. In a way it acts as GPS for MR images. With SyMRI Diagnostics any contrast-setting can be visualized without the need to scan the patient again, which greatly improves the effectiveness of the image analysis process and provides better decision support for the radiologist. SyntheticMR at ISMRM in Canada
SyntheticMR paticipated on May 7-13th at the Annual Meeting of International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), held in Montreal
Our company, represented by CEO Marcel Warntjes, was involved in several presentations and
May12th 11:30 am he was one of the presenters during the session:
Advances in Image Analysis (in Room 511D-F)
He spoke on the topic ‘Using multi-parametric quantitative MRI to model myelin in the brain‘ showing the approach of Synthetic MRI and recent developments in the synthetic MRI technique.
Furthermore 3 scientific posters was presented:
- Contrast assessment of Synthetic Magnetic Resonance Imaging in clinical practice
- Estimation of total myelin volume in the brain
- T1 quantification in the cartilage of the knee with a modified IR-FSE technique
The interest for our concept and products was great and ISMRI in Canada was a very rewarding event for us.
Sectra User Meeting 2011
On April 13-14th, SyntheticMR participated at Sectra Scandinavian User Meeting in Linköping, Sweden. Hundreds of customers from Denmark, Norway and Sweden gathered to learn more about new products and give there feedback to their supplier.
As a partner of Sectra, SyntheticMR was of course at site giving demos of the product. Marcel Warntjes, CEO, also gave a presentation of SyMRI Diagnostics in one of the sessions.
SyntheticMR on Top 33 again
Once again SyntheticMR makes is to the top! This year the competition was tougher than ever. Over 200 companies were nominated, mostly IT- but also Bio- and MedTech companies. SynthethicMR is therefore proud to once again be ranked among the33 hottest start-up companies in Sweden 2011.
The jury consists of editorial staff from the Swedish technical magazine ‘Ny Teknik’ and the business magazine ‘Affärsvärlden’. Criteria’s to be nominated are for example a unique innovative product or service, great potential, based in Sweden, not started earlier than 2004 and not listed.
A background story of the company and its technique of synthetic magnetic resonance imaging were published in Ny Teknik last year at: http://www.nyteknik.se/nyheter/innovation/forskning_utveckling/article745941.ece
